I have always loved animals and knew somehow that they would become an integral part of my life. My “sliding doors” moment came when I had to make a necessary 21-day trip overseas. In that short time, I saw the mistreatment that so many animals endure. The lack of understanding and respect that so many individuals had for these homeless and neglected animals was heartbreaking.
There was one dog, that continually looked for me. She was also in desperate need of veterinary care. After a few days she allowed me to pick her up from the streets and take her to a vet. She was treated and spayed, and so began her recovery. I named her “Zoe” and on her discharge from the Veterinary Clinic she was able to stay with me for a couple of days before I had to leave. It was a bittersweet moment when I dropped her off to a carer. We had quickly built a bond and I would miss her, but ultimately I knew she was safe. After four months, a loving family adopted Zoe.
On my return home I found a course that was committed to science-based, force-free training and advocated for the welfare of the animal through the use of fear-free techniques, and I began my study.
